Finding a wig color based on your undertone

By Eseandre

When it comes to beauty tips and things, we love to ask our friends and family members for advice. It’s easy to do when you see someone with a hairstyle or lip color that you love. But how many times have you experienced this dilemma? You visit a beauty store and buy a lipstick, blush or eyeshadow color that a friend recommended. You get home, try it on and find out that it totally doesn’t match your skin tone. But how is this possible? The person you saw wearing the product you bought had the same coloring as you — or so you thought. But what you might not have taken into consideration is that a person’s undertone might have been completely different from yours. An undertone is simply the color underneath the surface of your skin. While the color of your skin falls into a universally recognized category (dark, light, tan, brown, fair, etc), what really matches your choice clothing or makeup is your undertone. There are three undertone types: warm, cool and neutral (a mix of warm and cool). In order to determine which colors work for you, there are a few simple things that you can do to figure it out. Look at your natural colors As in your natural skin and eye colors. They can help you determine your undertone. Basically, if you have blue, green or gray eyes, you belong to the cool class. How many people have told you that you were cool? This could be why. Coupled with these eye colors, if your hair is blond, black or brown, you definitely are a member of the cool clan! On the other hand, those with warm undertones will usually have red, black or brown hair with beautiful hazel, brown or amber eyes. If you have a neutral undertone, your undertone is about the same color as your skin tone. Strip down You can also try a little test: Go to your bathroom and strip your face of makeup. Then, get shirts in different color shades and hold them up against your face. Do blue and green colors match your face well? Your skin is cool-toned. Is it the red and yellow color that seems to look better? Then congratulations, your skin is warm-toned! Play the vein game Another simple thing you can do is use your vein colors as a guide. So flip your wrists over and let your veins speak to you. If your veins look greenish, your undertone is probably on the warm side. However, if you are cool-toned, then your veins will appear blue or purple. If you have neutral undertones, then your veins may appear colorless or match the color of your skin. Bling it on Think about the jewelry you wear often. Do you gravitate towards gold tones, or do you prefer to keep it simple with silver? The color of the metals can actually help you figure out your undertone. Warm and olive undertones look good in traditional gold. Silver, platinum and rose gold look good on those with cool undertones. If you can wear it all with no kind of clashing, you have a neutral undertone. Once you have determined your undertone, it should make selecting wig colors a little easier. For those with warm undertones, try tilting towards gold and brown wig shades. You can even pull off deep brown wigs with red or golden highlights. Conversely for cool undertones, your skin might be better with honey blonde, black or brown wigs with grey or wheat highlights. If you’re neutral, you can pull off almost everything, so don’t be afraid to play with colors. So if you’re still worried about picking the right wig color, you can make things easier for yourself by buying a wig that’s close to your natural hair color. That will help take any apprehension out of shopping. Besides, wig shopping should be fun after all! Then when you’re ready, you can get a little bolder with your color choices.
