How to Tame a Wig with too much Curl!

Heather mentioned that the cute style Sweet Talk by Gabor could be too much 'personality' for some folks in her wig review. She even had that reaction to it! Many of us want some curl in the style, but find that for our face size in a wig with both permatease and a curly texture can create too much volume. If you're feeling overwhelmed by the volume you can get yourself a pair of thinning shears and reduce some of the hair density that way. If you're not comfortable customizing the hair density on your own, I highly recommend taking it to a professional stylist who can help you with that. I ended up doing this on a curly wig from Tony of Beverly that I own and it works wonders to make the style take on a more natural look, and less like a huge hat! The curl pattern is a little bit harder to change! By using a looped brush or wide-toothed comb you can disrupt the curl pattern to loosen the look of the curl, which is what you are wanting. Normally, we don't recommend combing or brushing a wavy/curly style and only finger-combing the hair. Before doing anything permanent (like thinning) please wash the wig as described in Heather's instructions using liquid fabric softener in the wash basin. If the wig cap is in need of cleaning, soak it in wig shampoo for 5 minutes first. Drain soapy water and refill the sink with clean water and add a half-capful (since this is a short wig) of liquid fabric softener and let soak for 20 minutes which will help soften the permatease and condition the hair fibers. Don't dry your wig upside down but rather on a wire/plastic wig stand with a hairnet over the wig to control the fullness. Another thing you can do since you don't want to straighten it completely, is to use very hot tap water and to soak the wig for 5 minutes (without shampoo) in the sink. The heat from the hot water will help to relax the waves made during the manufacturing process. This method uses wet heat -- but not as high as that from steam (212 degrees F) to completely destroy the pre-set style. After trying to comb out the waves and relax them with the hot water soak then you can judge if you still wish to use thinning shears to reduce the volume of the hair fibers. And, you might just need to thin it a little bit versus a lot. Be very careful not to thin out too much density because you don't want to make the wig so thinned out that the wefting shows!

The Two Main Types of Wig Anxiety: Part One

May 11, 2021

Wig anxiety is a real thing and it can manifest in a couple of different ways.

A very common manifestation of wig anxiety that is particularly common among new wig wearers is the concern that everyone knows you’re wearing a wig. This is not true. This anxiety usually fades over time as you begin to realize that most people have no clue you’re wearing a wig. (And if anyone does notice, they tend to be fellow wig wearers, which is actually kind of a cool way to meet friends and share styling tips.)
