It could involve a grand gesture like spending a day at the spa, or it could be as simple as taking 10 minutes out of your day to meditate in a quiet space. Self-care time allows us to temporarily set aside our worries, stressors, and attachments so we can put ourselves first. Sometimes, it might feel like we’re way too busy to step away from our jobs or home situations. And some people might even feel guilty or feel like they’re being selfish if they took some time out for themselves. If you’re in that camp, please leave it right now. Believe it or not, the world will not fall apart because you’ve taken a moment or a whole day to tend to yourself. So don’t feel guilty about trying to preserve your mental, physical and emotional well-being. Self-care helps ensure that we stay fulfilled, refreshed and recharged. It helps combat the effects of stress. Stress can leave you feeling run down and helpless. And if you continue to keep running on that hamster wheel of anxiety, tension or aggravation, it’ll eventually take a toll on your health overall. Acts of self-care can help offset this. So if it helps, put some time on the calendar to do something that relaxes you or improves the quality of your life. When you’re on the job, you can do the same thing. Set a time during the day for you to leave your desk. You can go for a walk, take a quiet break in your car or go to lunch with a friend. Simple acts like these can help head off complete burnout on the job. And don’t forget that along with nurturing your mind and spirit, you’ll need to nourish your body as well. This involves eating right and enjoying the foods that love your body right back. No one is saying to deny yourself those special treats. Do what makes you happy. But when you feed your body right, you’ll feel better and probably have more energy. Never feel bad about putting yourself first. There’s only one you, and you have the right to live your best life. So if you’ve been leaving yourself on the back burner while taking care of everyone else, it’s time to make a change. If you go through life exhausted, stressed and overwhelmed, you won’t be helping anyone--especially yourself.
