Wigaholic

Hi, my name is Nancy and I'm a wigaholic.  Like many, many others, the delight I found in having a good hair day every day is it's own intoxicant. The styles, the colors, new releases every spring and fall, compliments from friends, family and strangers and my renewed self-confidence just made me want MORE.  At it's high point, my inventory was over ninety wigs. The "dark" part of this is, of course, none of these were free.  Helper hair costs.  Some cost a lot more than others but there's still a price tag and I was hooked. At approximately the same time I started wearing wigs, I also found myself in a state of financial crisis.  I had amassed a staggering amount of credit card debt (that I tried to ignore) and wig buying was not helping.  I finally had to face financial reality and deal with it.  It took four years, but all the debt is gone.  I love wigs, but I won't go into debt again to have a new one.  If I don't have the cash, there's no purchase. Many wig wearers are on fixed/limited incomes or maybe facing health or personal crises that create financial stresses. It wasn't just wigs that got me into my financial mess, but I want to encourage others to avoid the debt trap when buying wig(s) - or anything else, for that matter! There are ways to purchase on a budget and still look great. Some tips: -Wait for the sales.  If you're able to plan purchases around a certain time of the year, you can save even more (or spend less!) -Join a support group, either online or in person.  There's a number of groups on Facebook.  Many women are able to connect with someone who has their same sense of style and will trade, donate or sell to each other very inexpensively. -If you're a first time wearer, avoid the most expensive piece you've found as you will want to have two to start.  It's common to inadvertently damage a wig when you're new to it and you'll want to have a backup. -Consider cap construction carefully.  If you don't need that mono top or lace front, try to find a similar style with a standard cap.  The price point will follow. -Consider synthetic over human hair.  My very first piece was human hair when I didn't know a thing about wigs. It was lovely, but very expensive and needed constant TLC.  As a short wig wearer, synthetics are much better suited to my needs, last longer and don't need re-styling after each wash. Some women wear nothing but human hair - my intention certainly isn't to bash that in any way.  I understand why! -If you've amassed a gaggle of wigs you know you won't wear, list them on eBay or a Facebook selling site.  Getting something back is better than having them sit on your closet shelves. I adopted a "one in-one out" policy so no new ones unless I've sold another I don't wear. Lastly, my own personal recommendation is to limit the use of credit unless you can pay it off each month. Looking good is great, being debt-free is even better! Please feel free to contact any of the experienced people at CCHD for any buying questions. They'll be able to find a wig that's a good fit for you and your bank account!!
